Wireframing
Wireframing means creating simplified, black-and-white or grayscale mockups that define an interface's structure without addressing final visual design. It sets element placement, information hierarchy, and navigation flow.
This step validates a screen's organization with stakeholders before time is spent on visual design. On a customer portal redesign, a wireframe can quickly settle where the payment button or order summary should sit, without the conversation drifting into color choices. Revisions at this stage cost far less than once the visual mockups are finished.
A common trap is adding too much visual detail to a wireframe, which pushes reviewers to comment on fonts or colors instead of structure. It's better to keep the look deliberately rough, and say so out loud, so feedback stays focused on layout and flow.
