Value Proposition Design
Value Proposition Design is a method, complementary to the Business Model Canvas, that maps user expectations (jobs to be done, pains, desired gains) against what the product actually delivers (features, pains removed, gains created). The goal is to check that the offer genuinely matches the demand.
This exercise is useful before starting a new product or a major redesign, when the team already has feature ideas but hasn't formalized who they're really for. On a B2B SaaS product, for instance, it can reveal that a feature the engineering team considers a priority addresses no real pain for target users, while a very concrete friction point has no planned feature to solve it.
A common mistake is filling out the canvas alone, internally, based on what the team imagines about users rather than data from real interviews. The canvas only has value if the jobs, pains, and gains listed come from verified observations; otherwise it just documents the team's own internal biases.
