Design Thinking
Design thinking is a user-centered design method structured in iterative phases: empathy, problem definition, ideation, prototyping, and testing. It deliberately delays picking a single solution until the problem itself is clearly understood.
This method is used early in a project, when the real need is still uncertain. For example, before building a business app for field technicians, a few design thinking workshops can confirm that the actual blocker is offline data entry, not the reporting dashboard originally assumed. This avoids committing expensive development to a direction based on an unverified guess.
A common mistake is treating design thinking as a box to check before building what was already planned anyway. For the method to be worth anything, the team has to be willing to challenge the original idea if user interviews reveal a different problem. Without that openness, the workshops just become after-the-fact justification.
