Lean UX Canvas
The Lean UX Canvas is a framing tool that captures, on a single page, a product team's hypotheses before building a new feature: the business problem, the users involved, expected outcomes, assumptions, and how they'll be tested. It fits within the Lean Startup approach.
It's typically used at the start of a sprint or before launching a new initiative, when different people on the team each have a different idea of what problem is actually being solved. For a product recommendation feature, the canvas forces the team to write down the exact hypothesis ("users buy more when they see complementary products in their cart") and how it will be checked, before a single line of code is written.
The trap is filling out the canvas once and then forgetting about it once development starts. It's meant to be revisited as hypotheses get tested and confirmed or disproven; otherwise it becomes a dead document that no longer reflects the project's reality.
