Mobile First
Mobile first is a design approach that starts with a product's mobile version, then adapts it to larger screens, rather than the reverse. It's based on the fact that most web traffic now happens on mobile.
Designing from the tightest constraints first (small screen, sometimes unstable connection, one-handed use) forces the team to prioritize what matters most from the start. On a marketing site or e-commerce store, for instance, this approach forces an immediate decision on what information should appear first on a product page, instead of cramming in everything that fit on desktop and cutting things later.
A common trap is doing mobile first in appearance only, by resizing an existing desktop mockup instead of actually rethinking content hierarchy from the small screen up. The result looks mobile but keeps the same prioritization flaws as a desktop-first approach.
