Software Architecture

Software architecture refers to the overall organization of a piece of software: how its components are broken down, how they communicate, and which technologies and patterns structure the whole (monolith, microservices, hexagonal architecture, event-driven). It's the skeleton the rest of the product is built on.

Two SaaS platforms that look similar on the surface can have completely different trajectories depending on their architecture: one ships a new feature in two weeks, the other takes two months because any small change has side effects elsewhere in the code. The choice between monolith and microservices, for instance, mostly depends on team size and a real need to deploy parts of the system independently, not on following a trend.

The most common mistake is copying the architecture of a much larger company (microservices, event-driven) while the team and product are still small, adding operational complexity with no real benefit. On the other hand, never questioning an architecture that has become too rigid eventually caps the product's growth. Architecture should be reviewed regularly as the team and product scale, not set in stone once and for all.
