MCP Server
An MCP server (Model Context Protocol) is a standardized interface that lets a large language model (LLM) or AI agent securely access data and functions from business software. It exposes three types of capabilities: resources (read-only data), tools (executable actions such as creating a ticket or updating a CRM), and prompts (predefined context templates). Launched by Anthropic in late 2024, MCP is emerging in 2026 as the interoperability standard between AI assistants and enterprise systems.
It's the key building block for connecting a CRM, ERP, or internal database to ChatGPT, Claude, or an automation agent like n8n, without rewriting a custom integration for each AI model. At Fragments Studio, we deploy MCP servers so clients can query business data in natural language and trigger actions from conversational interfaces. An MCP server naturally complements automation workflows: the orchestrator handles flows, while MCP exposes your tools' capabilities to AI agents.
Exposing all data and all actions without filtering is the most common trap. An MCP server must enforce the same authorization rules as your application: an agent should only access resources the connected user is allowed to see. Without that guardrail, an AI reasoning error can modify sensitive data or leak information outside the intended scope.
