Machine Learning
Machine learning is a branch of artificial intelligence in which a model learns to recognize patterns from large amounts of data, rather than following rules explicitly written by a developer. Once trained, it generalizes what it learned to new data.
It's the technical foundation behind most "smart" features in a product: detecting a fraudulent transaction, recommending a product to a customer, or predicting a stockout before it happens. The large language models used in generative AI are one specific application of machine learning, trained specifically on text, but the discipline also covers more targeted cases like scoring or demand forecasting, often cheaper to build than an LLM-based project.
A machine learning model is never better than the data it learned from: biased or incomplete historical data produces biased predictions, even with a flawless algorithm. Before starting a project like this, it's worth auditing the quality and representativeness of the available data rather than focusing on the model choice first.
