AI Chatbot
An AI chatbot is a conversational application that relies on a language model (often an LLM) to understand user questions and answer in natural language. Unlike rule-based chatbots from the 2010s, it handles varied phrasing better, but it remains dialogue-centric: it answers; it does not necessarily act inside business systems.
It's often a company's first step into generative AI: internal FAQ, tier-1 support, HR or sales assistant. Well built with RAG on real documentation, an AI chatbot cuts repetitive tickets. When the need goes beyond answering (updating a CRM, creating a ticket, triggering a workflow), you move to an AI agent: the chatbot stays the interface, not the execution brain.
Launching a chatbot without a reliable knowledge base or satisfaction metrics quickly creates frustration: vague, off-topic, or invented answers. Another mistake: promising an « autonomous agent » while shipping a simple chat. Clarify at scoping whether the goal is to answer, route, or act, and instrument resolution and human-escalation rates.
