Product Roadmap
A product roadmap is a chronological or theme-based representation of a product's planned evolution: new features, redesigns, technical work. It aligns internal teams and stakeholders on priorities and arbitrates between short-term requests and long-term vision.
In practice, a roadmap answers a question clients or investors ask early on: what will you ship, and in what order? On a SaaS project, it also forces explicit trade-offs, for instance delaying a feature a major client requested in order to stabilize infrastructure first. It's typically revisited every quarter, at each strategic planning cycle, to stay aligned with what's actually happening on the ground.
The most common mistake is publishing a roadmap that's too precise too far out, with firm dates six months or a year ahead. The first surprise (a critical bug, unexpected user feedback, a shift in business priorities) makes it obsolete, and the team's credibility takes the hit. It's better to stay precise for the next four to six weeks and deliberately vague beyond that.
