Business Model Canvas
The Business Model Canvas is a one-page tool that breaks a business model into nine blocks: customer segments, value proposition, channels, customer relationships, revenue streams, key resources, key activities, key partners, and cost structure. It gives a full overview of the model on a single document.
It's typically used ahead of a SaaS project or a new business line, before a single line of code is written, to align founders, investors, and the engineering team on the same economic picture. A team might use it to clarify whether the product will be sold directly to small businesses or distributed through integration partners, which significantly changes development priorities. Filling it out as a group often surfaces disagreements or blind spots that had never been clearly stated before.
The classic mistake is filling out the canvas once and treating it as a fixed deliverable never touched again. It's a working tool meant to be revised as real-world learning comes in, especially on the revenue streams and customer segments blocks, which are usually the shakiest assumptions at the start. It's also worth avoiding filling it out alone: most of its value comes from the discussion it triggers among stakeholders.
