Backend

The backend is the part of an application that runs server-side, invisible to the end user: data handling, business logic, authentication, security, and communication with the database and external services. It's what processes an order or calculates a price before sending the result to the frontend.

When a customer checks out on an e-commerce site, the backend is what checks stock, applies discount rules, charges the card through the payment provider, and records the order, often coordinating several services at once. For business software with complex rules (billing, permissions, regulated calculations), this is where most of the product's value and complexity actually sit, far more than in the visible interface.

A common mistake is under-investing in backend structure at the start of a project, mixing business logic with technical code, which makes each new feature slower to build than the last. Adopting a clear architecture early, DDD or hexagonal architecture for complex business software, costs more upfront but avoids technical debt that becomes very hard to pay down once the product has been in production for years.
