API (Application Programming Interface)

An API (Application Programming Interface) is the interface that lets two pieces of software communicate, without either needing to know the other's internal details. It only needs to follow the contract the API defines: which endpoints to call, what data to send, and what format to expect back.

It's what lets an e-commerce site connect to a payment provider like Stripe, a mobile app talk to its server, or a product integrate an external AI model. On most projects today, the API isn't a minor technical detail: it's often what determines whether an integration with a partner or third-party tool takes a day to set up or turns into months of headaches.

Many teams underestimate how much an API's documentation and stability matter: an API that changes behavior without warning, or that isn't documented, silently breaks the integrations that depend on it. Before building a critical integration on a third-party API, it's worth checking its versioning policy and change history rather than discovering problems once it's already in production.
